Monopoly Ditches Cash With New App-Based Board Game: See The Huge Changes

Forget about picking a banker or flipping deeds to mortgage properties, Monopoly is going digital.

Hasbro unveiled Monopoly App Banking at the North American International Toy Fair in New York City. The newest version is a major change as the classic board game celebrates its 90th anniversary.

The digital-based game replaces paper money and the banker role with a mobile app handling all transactions, The Verge reported. Players will scan their bank and property cards into a smartphone or tablet, which will track money and automate transactions.

The update aims to make gameplay easier and faster, eliminating cash counting while also making it harder to cheat. However, it also removes Monopoly's traditional math element, a feature some parents and teachers have used to teach financial skills.

The game board has been reimagined with a kid-friendly theme, changing the properties originally based on locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Instead of high-value spots like Boardwalk and Park Place, players can purchase things like a rocket launch pad, a chocolate factory, and a dinosaur park.

The app also includes mini-games offering perks to keep younger players engaged. The launch follows Hasbro's recent Monopoly Expansion Packs and an updated classic edition.

Monopoly App Banking will be available at most major retailers in August for $24.99.
